加藤雅俊・経済学部教授は「ハイテクスタートアップ企業のイノベーションにおけるVCおよび政府の役割」に関するプロジェクトを実施しており、先日研究成果（「VC投資家タイプは重要か？新規企業に対するVC投資の要因と効果」と題するディスカッションペーパーを発行）を発表しました。
この研究では、日本のデータを用いて、ベンチャー・キャピタル（VC）がスタートアップ企業の成長過程に果たす役割について実証的に分析しています。研究からは、独立系VCからの投資を受けた新規企業は、VCから投資を受けなかった企業よりも規模が大きく、若く、イノベーティブである傾向があることが分かりました。しかし、コーポレートVC、金融系VC、政府系VCからの出資に影響を与える要因は、独立系VCに影響を与える要因と大きく異なっていることが示されました。
次に、VCからの支援の効果を明らかにするために、VCの支援を受けたスタートアップ企業が、非VC支援企業と比べてより優れた成長およびイノベーションのパフォーマンスを達成するかどうかを明らかにしました。その結果、独立系VCからの投資はスタートアップ企業のパフォーマンスを向上させることが示されました。しかし、他の投資家タイプ（コーポレートVC、金融系VC、政府系VC）からの投資に関しては、スタートアップ企業のパフォーマンスに対する有意な効果は見られませんでした。

Professor Masatoshi Kato of the School of Economics is conducting a project on "The Role of VC and Government in the innovation activities of High-Tech Start-Ups" and recently published a discussion paper entitled "Does VC Investor Type Matter? Determinants and Effects of VC backing for New Firms in Japan").
This study empirically analyzes the role venture capital (VC) plays in the growth process of start-ups using Japanese data. The study found that new firms that received investment from independent VCs tended to be larger, younger, and more innovative than firms that did not receive investment from VCs. However, the factors influencing investment from corporate VC, finance-affiliated VC, and government-funded VC were shown to differ significantly from those influencing independent VC.
Next, to determine the effect of support from VCs, we explored whether VC-backed firms achieve better growth and innovation performance than non-VC-backed firms.
