Individual Research

Following the research plan, I conducted studies in collaboration with reseachers at other universities  to explore the question of how investors and households process information, by using both market data in the stock markets and questionnaire surveys. For the market data approach, I utilized stock market prices, trading volume and various information sources that investors are exposed to. In the questionnaire survey, I utilized self-reported asset management situations and behaviors based on hypothetical settings.
First, in order to examine how investors respond to various types of information, we quantitatively analyzed the effects of corporate information on trading volume and stock prices at the daily level. As corporate information, I utilized corporate disclosure, which is traditionally valued by both financial institutions and individual investors, mass media reports that have a large influence on individual investors, and corporate advertising information. These information sources are categorized into hard and soft information, and I analyzed not only their independent stock market effects but also their mutual effects (e.g., into complementary and substitutive effects).
Second, for questionnaire surveys, I examined the effects of information use on household asset management. Specifically, we asked questions to measure individuals' interest attitudes, financial literacy, and psychological attitudes, and then advanced our analysis of their effects on the use of new financial services. In addition, a questionnaire based on conjoint analysis was conducted to investigate individuals' asset management behaviors. The questions were constructed to identify the factors that contribute to the demand for financial advice and the demand for sustainable investment. In particular, by randomly presenting various conditions (attributes) related to advice, I could identify which financial and qualitative conditions are important to households. Further, I investigated the impact of financial and environmental knowledge and ethics on sustainable investment, and also the influence of financial ethics on risky asset investment.
