(週刊東洋経済オンライン 2024年6月12日)
c) 査読付き雑誌への掲載
Yuki Higuchi, Keisaku Higashida, Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, Mohammad Sujauddin, Ryo Takahashi, Kenta Tanaka (2024). From hospitality to hostility: Impact of the Rohingya refugee influx on the sentiments of host communities. Economic Development and Cultural Change. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1086/730704

Report on the Results
Name: Keisaku Higashida, School of Economics
Research Topic: Investigation on the changing relationship between Rohingya refugees and host community residents.
Research period: April 1, 2023 – Margh 31, 2024
Fundamental Research Project: Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), April 2020 - March 2025, "Rohingya Refugee Camps and Resource Sustainability: Analysis of Forest and Agricultural Land Management and Environmental Impacts on Ethnic Minorities" (Assignment No. 20H04394)
Research Results
(1) The results of the research project were disseminated and papers completed by the previous fiscal year were published in a peer-reviewed journal.
a) Conference and conference reports
Keisaku Higashida (Co-authored by Yuki Higuchi, Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, Mohammad Sujauddin, Ryo Takahashi, Kenta Tanaka). b) Dissemination of information to the society
Yuki Higuchi. "Sentiment toward refugees" is critical, difficulties in refugee-hosting regions: Impact analysis of the Rohingya refugee inflows by using the satellite images and experimental data. Weekly Toyo Keizai, June 15, 2024. (Weekly Toyo Keizai Online, June 12, 2024)
c) Publication in peer-reviewed journals
Yuki Higuchi, Keisaku Higashida, Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, Mohammad Sujauddin, Ryo Takahashi, Kenta Tanaka (2024). From hospitality to hostility: Impact of the Rohingya refugee influx on the sentiments of host communities. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1086/730704
(2) Preparation for a social experiment
The project prepared for a social experiment to clarify what methods would be effective in promoting mutual understanding between Rohingya refugees and the residents in the surrounding communities and building a sustainable social and economic system. Although the basic design had been completed by March 2023, the design was revised a few times as a result of examining various elements and methods. For this reason, another pre-experiment was needed and, accordingly, we conducted it. The purpose of the experiment is to measure the changes in sentiments/preferences, behavior, and sense of belonging to the community of the residents in the host communities after they gain experiences relating to refugees.
(3) Submitting the papers on the research results on Chittagong Hill Tracts to peer-reviewed journals
The adjacent area of Cox's Bazar province, where the Rohingya refugee camp is located, is inhabited by ethnic minorities in Bangladesh. We have submitted papers analyzing the data obtained from the economic experiment and survey we conducted in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The following two papers are now under review in the international peer-reviewed journal.
