Hiroyuki Tanaka, Professor of School of Business Administration, gave a presentation titled "Nominative-Genitive Conversion in Japanese" at 30th Japanese/Korean Linguistics Conference held in Vancouver, Canada on March 11-13, 2023.  Nominative-Genitive Conversion, where the subject of a prenominal clause can be marked in genitive as well as nominative (as in John-ga/-no kita riyuu `the reason why John came') is one of the most important topic in the theoretical study of the grammar of Japanese.  There have been two approaches as to where the genitive case comes from: one is to assume that it comes from some functional head associated with riyuu of the above example; another is to assume that it comes from some functional head associated with kita.  This presentation explores a third approach, where the genitive comes quite locally, from a nominal functional head that immediately contains the subject.  It was shown that this hypothesis makes it possible to account for the more restricted distribution of genitive subjects, such as transitivity restriction and the unavailability of accusative-genitive conversion.
