This was a collaborative presentation at the 20th annual CamTESOL Conference in Phnom Pehn, Cambodia, February 23-25, 2024. Based upon the research of Stephen Krashen of the University of Southern California that focuses on the "input hypothesis" in second language learning in which "language is subconsciously acquired", what Chomsky has termed "tacit language" (Krashen, 1989), this presentation introduced a novel approach to language acquisition: the Listen/Ask/Follow-up Method which is designed to scaffold authentic conversation in the EFL classroom. There are three key elements: LISTEN, using active listening strategies to understand the key components of a speaker enabling the listener to ASK relevant questions which then allows the speaker to FOLLOW-UP and move the conversation forward. This approach empowers new EFL teachers to create an environment wherein young learners feel confident in using English to converse authentically. I introduced the presentation giving some background information related to the research and explaining how the concept of scaffolding could be utilised in the adoption of this method. Kane Linton, a fellow researcher at Kwansei Gakuin gave the main body of the presentation based upon his own applications of this methodology. Rob Stevenson, a researcher at Tamagawa University then demonstrated how this methodology could be implemented within the Cambodian educational context. I concluded the presentation with practical examples that the audience could take away with them to implement this methodology to foster dynamic and meaningful dialogue within their own classrooms.
