　2022年度から2024年度に、大学共同研究（学長指定研究）として「ヴォーリズ建築のアーカイブ構築および歴史的位置づけの再考と現代的意義の探求」を実施しました。
　本研究は、建築学部ヴォーリズ研究センター（以下VRC）における研究テーマとして、センターのメンバー6名（山根周（建築学部教授／代表者）・石榑督和（建築学部准教授）・谷口真紀（建築学部准教授）・角野幸博（関西学院大学名誉教授）・山形政昭（大阪芸術大学名誉教授・関西学院大学フェロー)・中山献児（（株）一粒社ヴォーリズ建築事務所顧問））からなる研究チームにより進められました。
　本研究では、以下のテーマについて探究することを目的としました。
①膨大に残されているヴォーリズの建築設計図面の調査とデジタルデータ化の検討、ならびにヴォーリズ建築図面の全体像の把握と今後の活用に向けた整理と活用方法の検討。
②データ化された図面資料に基づいた、ヴォーリズの建築作品における計画的特色、意匠的特色、構造的特色などの分析と検討。
③アメリカにおけるスパニッシュ・ミッション・スタイル、スパニッシュ・リバイバルならびにクラフツ・ムーブメントの系譜におけるヴォーリズ建築の建築史的位置づけの検討。
④アメリカのキャンパス計画の系譜におけるヴォーリズのキャンパスデザインの建築史的位置づけの検討。
⑤キリスト教信仰に根ざしたヴォーリズの思想、活動の内実の解明と、それらの建築設計への反映に関する検討。
⑥ヴォーリズ建築の保存再生および現代建築への継承ならびに都市再生・地方創生への効果に関する検討。
　ヴォーリズ建築関連資料のアーカイブ構築については、VRC所蔵の文献資料の目録作成とラベル貼付による保管体制を整備するとともに、戦後建築を中心とした図面資料のデジタルデータ化を進め、アーカイブ化に向けたリスト化作業を実施したほか、ヴォーリズ建築の現存リストの作成に取り組みました。
　また、ヴォーリズの建築スタイル、建築思想の源泉を探るため、アメリカにおいて、スパニッシュ・ミッション・スタイルの起源に触れ、同スタイルによるキャンパス計画の実例に関する調査やヴォーリズが学んだコロラド・カレッジにおける資料収集等を実施したほか、ヴォーリズによる戦後期の住宅建築に関する調査研究や、ヴォーリズ建築の継承や活用に関する調査研究などを実施しました。
　これら3年間の研究成果は、VRC紀要『ヴォーリズ研究 1』（2024.3）、『ヴォーリズ研究 2』（2025.3）のほか、査読論文誌、学会発表などを通じて公開しました。

From fiscal year 2022 to 2024, we conducted a Collaborative Special Research　(designated by the president) titled “Construction of an Archive for Vories Architecture, Reexamination of Its Historical Positioning, and Exploration of Its Contemporary Significance”

This research was conducted as a research theme at the Vories Research Center (VRC) in the School of Architecture, and was carried out by a research team consisting of six members of the center: Shu Yamane (Professor, School of Architecture / Representative), Masakazu Ishigure (Associate Professor, School of Architecture), Maki Taniguchi (Associate Professor, School of Architecture), Yukihiro Kadono (Emeritus Professor, Kwansai Gakuin University), Masaaki Yamagata (Emeritus Professor, Osaka University of Arts / Fellow, Kwansai Gakuin University), and Kenji Nakayama (Advisor, W. M. Vories & Company Architects Ichiryusha Co., Ltd.).

The objectives of this research were as follows:

①To investigate the vast collection of Vories' architectural design drawings, explore the possibility of digitizing them, and organize and examine the overall picture of Vories' architectural drawings for future use.

②To analyze and examine the planning characteristics, design characteristics, and structural characteristics of Vories' architectural works based on the digitized drawing materials.

③Examination of the architectural historical position of Vories architecture within the lineage of the Spanish Mission Style, Spanish Revival Style, and Crafts Movement in the United States.

④Examination of the architectural historical position of Vories campus design within the lineage of campus planning in the United States.

⑤Clarification of the substance of Vories' ideas and activities rooted in Christian faith, and examination of their reflection in architectural design.

⑥Examination of the preservation and restoration of Vories architecture, its inheritance to contemporary architecture, and its effects on urban regeneration and regional revitalization.

Regarding the construction of an archive of materials related to Vories architecture, we have established a storage system by cataloging and labeling the literature materials held by the VRC, and have proceeded with the digitization of drawing materials centered on postwar architecture. We have also carried out listing work toward archiving, and have begun compiling a list of existing Vories architecture.

Furthermore, in order to explore the origins of Vories' architectural style and philosophy, we conducted research in the United States on the origins of the Spanish Mission style and examples of campus plans using this style, collected materials from Colorado College where Vories studied, and conducted research on Vories' post-war residential architecture and the inheritance and utilization of Vories architecture.

The results of these three years of research have been published in the VRC Journal "New Horizons in Vories Studies Vol. 1" (March 2024), “New Horizons in Vories Studies Vol. 2” (March 2025) , as well as through peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.
