Professor Sadahiko Nakajima from the Faculty of Letters presented a poster on "A 'humane' technique for establishing conditioned taste avoidance in rats and mice" at the 33rd International Congress of Psychology (ICP2024) held in Prague, Czech Republic, from July 21 to 26, 2024. This presentation introduced a method to establish taste aversion learning (conditioned taste avodance) by providing novel food to rats and mice without imposing food or water restrictions and allowing them to run voluntarily in activity wheels. This method is termed "humane" as it yields aversion learning without aversive treatments. The International Congress of Psychology is an international conference held every four years (in the year of the Summer Olympics). It was initially scheduled to take place in Prague in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed by one year and held as the 32nd International Congress of Psychology (ICP2020+1) in 2021, in a hybrid format with both in-person and online participation. However, possibly due to a low number of on-site participants, it was decided, in consultation between the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS) and the local organizers, to hold the 33rd Congress again in Prague in 2024 again. This time, the format mainly involved on-site participation, with some online participation as well. Many psychologists from around the world gathered at the venue, engaging in vigorous discussions. There were also numerous participants from Japan, including Professor Tsuneyuki Abe, President of the Japanese Psychological Association and a professor at Tohoku University.
