重藤真介・理学部教授と菅野菜々子・理学部助教が共鳴ラマンスペクトルと蛍光スペクトルの同時取得によって、微生物の色素生産多様性を1細胞レベルかつ非破壊的に分析する手法を開発しました。その研究成果が2025年4月10日、アメリカ微生物学会の学術誌『Applied and Environmental Microbiology』でオンライン公開されました。重藤教授らの開発した手法により、天然色素であるカロテノイド生産菌や、自然界における生態が未解明なバクテリオクロロフィル型光合成細菌の探索が可能となりました。これは、新たな有用分子生産微生物の発見につながることが期待されます。また、環境微生物の地球化学的物質循環への寄与を新たな観点から解析することが可能となったことで、環境問題の解決にも資することが期待されます。

Professor Shinsuke Shigeto (Faculty of Science) and Assistant Professor Nanako Kanno (Faculty of Science) have developed a method for analyzing the diversity of pigment production in microorganisms at the single-cell level and non-destructively by simultaneously acquiring resonance Raman spectra and fluorescence spectra. The results of their research were published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology on April 10, 2025. The method developed by Professor Shigeto and his colleagues has made it possible to search for bacteria that produce carotenoids, which are natural pigments, and bacteriochlorophyll-type phototrophic bacteria, the ecology of which in nature is not yet understood. This is expected to lead to the discovery of new microorganisms that produce useful molecules. In addition, it is expected to contribute to solving environmental problems by making it possible to analyze the contribution of environmental microorganisms to the geochemical cycle from a new perspective.
