本研究は、フォトジャーナル『ライフ』（1936年創刊）とニューディール・ナショナリズムの交差に関して、クロスメディア的視座から考察する試みである。
ニューディール期のアメリカにおいて、メディア文化への関与は政治的戦略であり、メタフォリカルな「弾丸」であった。FSAのドキュメンタリー写真、OWIのプロパガンダ映画、そしてFWPのガイドブック制作やフォークロア収集などは好例だろう。それらは、いわば国家による文化のデータベース生成であり、「アメリカ」を可視化することに他ならない。本研究は、ニューディールのメディアのなかでも、「写真」のメカニズムに注力し、フォトジャーナル誌『ライフ』とFSA写真プロジェクトを軸に、モダニズム／ファシズムとの影響関係を検証し、学際的な結論を導き出すことを目指した。

This study is an attempt to examine the intersection between the photographic journal Life (first published in 1936) and New Deal nationalism from a cross-media perspective.
During the New Deal era in the United States, media culture was a political strategy and a metaphorical “bullet.” Examples include the FSA's photographic documentaries, the OWI's propaganda films, and the FWP's guidebook production and folklore collection. These were, so to speak, the creation of a cultural database by the nation, and nothing less than the visualization of “America.” This study focused on the mechanisms of “photography” within New Deal media, using the photographic journal Life and the FSA photography project as its axis, to examine the influence of modernism and fascism and draw interdisciplinary conclusions.
